Program

Sandy Jones — Herkimer County Public Health

“It Takes a Man to Be a Dad”

Sandy Jones, a New Hartford Rotarian, spoke to us today about a “Rotary driven, District 7150 Project” addressing the issue of “absent Dads.” She provided a video presentation and data pertinent to our area.

According to the U.S. census, over 25 million children (one in three) live apart from their biological fathers. Absent fathers affect maternal and child health, child abuse, teen pregnancy, substance abuse, poverty, education, crime, incarceration, and childhood obesity. Basically absent dads affect every social issue pertaining to the family.

This initiative, “It Takes a Man to Be a Dad,” will raise the awareness of the effect of missing fathers on the lives of their children. It focuses on one of the core causes in the disintegration of the family. The family is the building block of any society. The destruction of family structure and values is indisputably linked to the instability of the society as a whole. The absence of the father in the home, or the nonparticipation of a physically present father is a significant part of that disintegration.

The program is designed to work with existing programs and is intended “to inspire, fathers, mothers, and the community to create nurturing environments for children” while respecting and honoring the unique and necessary contributions of both parents in the home. It is a “divine right” of every child to have a mother and a father present.

Rotary is already involved in the lives of children around the world in many ways. “This is an additional area where Rotary can make a significant impact in a very short time.” Opportunities to support this program are available to each club in the district, and clubs are encouraged to create an increased awareness at their local level and to support this program financially.

“Thank you” Sandy for bringing information on this worthwhile project to the Rome Club.
