Rotary News
The Secretariat — Many Rotarians consider the Secretariat
simply another name for the RI World Headquarters in Evanston, Illinois, USA.
Actually it is much more. The name describes the entire operations of the
general secretary and more than 600 member staff working to make Rotary International
and the Rotary Foundation run smoothly and effectively. In addition to World
Headquarters, the Secretariat includes seven RI international offices around
the world. The Secretariat’s sole purpose is to serve the clubs, districts, and
administrative officers of Rotary International and The Rotary Foundation. RI
World Headquarters, in a building called One Rotary Center, is the headquarters
of the Secretariat.

· Rotary Interact Club of RFA will sponsor a dinner at the RFA cafeteria on 19 Mar from 6:15–8:15 PM. Cost is $7 per person. Program
RFA Social Action
Corp. (Rotary Interact)
Nancy Neiley
Seven inspiring young women visited Rotary today to share the activities of the RFA Social Action Corps (Rotary Interact Club). The club has about 25 members. Each committee is run by the students themselves. They develop and implement their own ideas for service, making the needed decisions under supervision of their advisor, Rotarian Nancy Neiley.
Every Interact club is sponsored and supervised by a Rotary club and must plan annual projects of service with a goal of providing opportunities for the young people involved to gain greater global understanding.
Club President Erin Hall led today’s presentation, as each member spoke about the work of the club and the events they sponsor.
The activities of RFA’s Interact club have included a dinner last year for the Darfur victims. $1,200 was raised for those relief efforts. A candy sale for the women of Uganda generated the funds to buy sewing machines that provide occupation and income for these women. Interact became involved in Polio Plus with an in-school fundraiser. Every student who donated 60¢ or more, was given a paper hand to sign for display and had their “pinkies painted purple,” symbolic of the procedure used in target countries to identify those who have received vaccine. $336 dollars was raised, enough to vaccinate 560 children. These students participated in Rome Rotary’s Halloween program and served as guides and hosts/hostesses for the International Student Day last fall.
Future plans include a dinner on Thursday, 19 Mar at the RFA Cafeteria to raise money for the “Clean Water Haiti,” a matching grant water project. It is targeted at an area in Haiti where women walk five miles to the mountains to fill water jugs with dirty polluted undrinkable water. The filled jugs carried on their heads weigh 80 pounds. The project will run a pipeline from the mountains to the valley and through a filter system to purify it for use. (For dinner details see announcements.)
There is also a fund raising concert planned for this spring and a one day trip to NYC for the club members.
“Thank you” to each one of you for an excellent presentation.
